NFDI and the Göttingen Campus
What is the NFDI?
The NFDI (National Research Data Infrastructure) improves and promotes the infrastructure for research data in Germany. The necessary offerings and subject-specific expertise are developed in discipline-oriented consortia. One major aim of the NFDI is ensuring and extending national data independence. The non-profit Association German National Research Data Infrastructure (Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) e.V.) coordinates the activities to establish a National Research Data Infrastructure. The association is supervised by the board of directors and works in various association institutions. The NFDI will also be linked to international initiatives such as the European Open Science Cloud and participate in its development.
How Göttingen Campus Researchers Can Benefit
The NFDI offers researchers guidance, services and support in all aspects of managing research data. With their discipline-specific focus, each NFDI consortium addresses the needs of their research community with respect to research software, data processing and storage, standards and best practices, and making research data (re-)usable.
By interacting with your discipline-specific NFDI consortium, you as a researcher can benefit from sustainable national and international research data infrastructure technologies, workflows, and communities. The eRA supports the Göttingen Campus by acting as an interface between research and NFDI, and by coordinating supporting activities.
eRA Activities with Regard to NFDI at Göttingen Campus
- Consulting on Research Data Management (RDM) topics
- Technical infrastructure provision for the Göttingen NFDI activities
- Training on using NFDI services
- Promoting and coordinating exchange of NFDI activities on campus

Göttingen as a Strong Player in the NFDI
- Various institutions of the Göttingen Campus are involved in 17 of the currently 27 NFDI consortia, which started their work on 1 October 2020, 1 October 2021 and 1 January 2023 respectively.
- The Göttingen Campus makes a substantial contribution to the development of the NFDI in Germany and is dedicated to the establishment of the NFDI as an overall task of science policy.
- The strategy to establish local support structures is increasingly driven by the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) and the GWDG.
- The Göttingen eResearch Alliance as long-established RDM hub for the Göttingen Campus supports the NFDI consortia participants on campus
- More information is available in the Uni Göttingen Press Release
