11/03/2020: eResearch Lab: GRO.data and the Dataverse API

Hereby we announce the upcoming event of the eResearch Lab. This time is the topic: Working with GRO.data and the Dataverse API.

GRO.data is a research data repository available free of charge for the members of Göttingen Campus. Its purpose is to enable publication of research data alongside with their description (metadata). The data gets a persistent identifier (DOI), and its metadata are propagated to the central DOI database, which is used by different discovery services.
GRO.data provides versioning, data citation, file previews, assignment of licenses, restricting files (and granting access). It also provides place for organizations (departments, research groups, journals) to manage member participations via customisable roles and responsibilities. Almost all the functionalities of the service are available via APIs, so one can easily build an automated communication channel between a research software (such as document management systems, lab notebooks) and GRO.data. GRO.data is based on the open source Dataverse tool.

Date: 11 MAR 2020
Time: 10h – 12h
Location: SUB Göttingen, Historical Building, Papendiek 14, Room 0.202 (entry from the foyer)
Language: English
Topics:

  • Data upload
  • Metadata scheme
  • Changing data in the repository
  • Publishing data
  • Using the Dataverse API

Notes:

  • Please bring your own computer, if possible. It will help to follow the interactive setup in your common system.
  • The event is a mixture of training and open hour. Come by to learn about the features of GRO.data, try out to administer your publications and ask questions.

Agenda:

1. Introduction to GRO.data, the research data repository of the Göttingen Campus

The tutorial introduces the usage of GRO.data alongside the basic concepts of research data management (data, metadata, data collection, data citation, persistent identifiers etc.). It shows how to log in, create a dataset, metadata, how to collaborate with peers. The format is a mixture of presentation and a hands-on session.

Duration: 1 hour (depending on the questions and the special use cases of the audience)
Requirement: notebook (only if one would like to participate in the hands-on session)

2. Introduction to GRO.data API

The tutorial introduces the usage of GRO.data API. Almost all functionalities of the service are available with the usage of the API. There are some client tools available written in different programming languages, however the tutorial shows the usage via command line examples, using cURL tool.

Duration: 1 hour
Requirements: knowledge of the GRO.data functionalities; a notebook, cURL tool installed (available at https://curl.haxx.se/download.html)
